Giro d'Italia with a Fiat 500

Today we would like to share a travel report from Reimund Limbacher with you. Last autumn he drove from Ingolstadt to Sicily and back with his wife - in their Fiat 500 from 1972!

The tour started on September 1st in Ingolstadt. From there they drove to Fiss-Ladis in Tyrol, over the "Piller Höhe" through a thunderstorm. Fortunately, everything stayed dry except for a few drops which came through the folding roof... And just before reaching the Maloja Pass, the weather became wonderful again!
In Chiavenna in front of Lago di Como the three of them accidentally get into a Fiat Cinquecento meeting - the timing couldn't have been better! From Genoa to Palermo they took the ferry to save some time. Once in Palermo, the tour of Sicily began, via Trapani and Marsala and towards the south coast.

The two travelers met old friends in Linguaglossa at the northern foot of Mount Etna. It was here where their beloved Cinquecento ran the first decades of his life. He brought Reimund and his wife to an altitude of 1.800 meters, from where they continued walking towards the volcanic summit.

The next ferry ride took them from Messina back to the mainland to Calabria, where Tropea was the next destination. Here the two had the only breakdown on the trip of 4.700 km and five and a half weeks; a flat left tire.
The next section of the route lead along the "sole" of the Italian boot to Puglia and on to Gargano. The Fiat continued to do everything well, it was enough to do a little check from time to time and refill the oil.

The tour continued north in the Marche, just before San Marino. Past Venice towards Trieste, from there the strenuous way back across the Alps...
The Cinquecento was really spared nothing. Together with his driver, he bravely crossed the highest mountan of Austria; the Grossglockner. The end station was the Wilder Kaiser mountain range after around six weeks and 6.000 km of travelling.

We were very happy about the pictures and wish Reimund loads of great tours in the years ahead. If you have special Fiat photos or stories you would like to share with us, we look forward to hearing from you! :-)
